The NBN uses a mixed mode to deliver its service, so if your residence is now NBN ready, it is important to know which NBN connection you have and how to successfully connect your internet!
Step 1: Check your home address is NBN ready
On the NBNCo website, do a search on your residential address to understand if your NBN service is ready and which connection mode it uses:

Step 2: Connect to the NBN
NBN Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC)
This may be a residential apartment building, slightly older, but has pay tv services (eg. Foxtel) already wired through the building. This HFC cabling is connected to the nearest fibre node to deliver your NBN internet.
The HFC connection type will require an NBN access device in your residence. This will be installed by an NBN Technician.
When you contact your Retail Service provider (RSP) to organise your new NBN connection, they will enable the service for your residence and should also assist you in booking the NBN Technician (via a third party) to attend your premises and install this device.
This NBN access device resembles a black, small box. It will require a powerpoint and the Pay TV wall socket nearby. The Technician will do all the cabling and testing to ensure the internet connection is flowing to your residence.
You will then need to connect your router / modem to the NBN access device via an internet (ethernet) cable. The NBN Technician may perform this task for you, but it is recommended to check the internet cable is connected to the correct port. Your router / modem is not the NBN Technician responsibility, but rather the RSP and your responsibility.
The internet cable should connect to the UNI-D1 port on the NBN access device. The other end of the cable needs to be connected to your router / modem WAN port. Also ensure your router / modem is plugged into a power point and is powered on.
It may be necessary to configure your router / modem with the correct settings. If you purchased this from your RSP, then it should all be pre-configured, and should be ready to “plug and play”.  Otherwise, refer to your router / modem configuration guide – your RSP should also be able to assist you with this task.
Wait a few minutes for the router / modem LED lights to flicker on. Check that Power, WiFi, WAN, Internet LED lights are all green. The Internet light indicates the NBN is working. If you have any household devices (eg. Internet TV) physically connected to the router / modem, the LAN port should also light up.
